About this map:

SAFESTAY MEDIA WALK (© Sophie Campbell, www.love-london.com) BackgroundElephant & Castle is a big presence in a big borough: Southwark has over 4 miles of river frontage and its star sites include Borough Market, Shakespeare’s Globe, the Imperial War Museum and The Shard. It has a 2,000-year-old connection to the City: Romans bridged the marshland between Londinium and the south bank and Southwark was probably a supply depot. Elephant & Castle, a mighty hub of roads and railways, is in the northern part of the borough, with a £1.5bn, 55-acre revamp under way. In the 18th Century the Walworth Road ran through market gardens and orchards famous for their Newington peaches. The WalkThis self-guided walk takes 1-1½ hours, making a loop up to Waterloo, crossing briefly into Lambeth, and returning via Elephant roundabout.
