Benin: On September 16, the U.S. Mission in Cotonou, in collaboration with three non-governmental organizations (NGO), launched the “U.S. Mission Cotonou Go Green” project at the Mission and the Local English-Speaking school, the first attempt in Benin to collect recyclables. The initiative focuses on disposal of used batteries, and recycling of plastic bottles and used motor oil. Special recycling bins have been positioned throughout the Mission and at the school, and recyclables will now be collected weekly and recycled by the local NGO Songhai which crushes the used plastics to obtain granules, and then produces new plastic bottles for their water, juice and yogurts. The school students said that this was the first time they had heard about recycling or the need to dispose of batteries properly.
