For my project, I chose the topic on ocean pollution. For this map, I will be showing the movement of the "Great Pacific Garbage Patch". This massive collection of waste and plastics is a growing phenomenon that is affecting marine life, our ocean, and us as a species. Pollutant's enter our water from land run-off that carries pesticides, sediments, and toxic-waste. The garbage collected in this "patch" is causing decreases of dissolved oxygen supplies which is a necessity for marine animals. Living organisms and marine animals are overwhelmed with the excessive amounts of nutrients released in the ocean. The growing garbage patch contains approximately 3.2 billion kg. of trash. Often, marine animals and fish mistake the patch for food. Once marine life consume pieces of the waste, their digestive system's can't break down the material, causing them to die of starvation. The garbage patch is located in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre.
