Born in Santervas, Spain, around 1460, Ponce de Leon was a soldier fighting Muslims in southern Spain in the early 1490's. He sailed on Christopher Columbus' second expedition to the Americas in 1493, but did not return to Spain with Columbus. Instead he stayed on various islands in the Carribean. He was searching for riches and the Fountain of Youth, a lengendary spring that gave people eternal life and health. Claiming the land for Spain, as he traveled from island to island, Ponce de Leon eventually found his way to Florida, making him the first known European to explore the United States.
