FFI: http://jamesrussellontheweb.blogspot.comEric Ravilious was tremendously inspired by the chalk Downland of southern England. Born in Acton in 1903, he moved to Eastbourne as a boy and returned to teach there after graduating from the Royal College of Art in 1925. But although paintings from this period hint at the artist Ravilious would become, it was his rediscovery of the Sussex Downs when in his early thirties that proved crucial. From 1934, when he visited artist and designer Peggy Angus at her cottage below Beddingham Hill, until his appointment as a war artist in December 1939, he created a remarkable body of work that ranges geographically across the Downland of Sussex, Wiltshire, Oxfordshire and Dorset, and in subject from ancient chalk figures to a 20th century cement works...
