As early as 1832 the nation had realized the need for a transcontinental railroad. In 1862 Congress passed the Pacific Railway Act which gave permission to build the Transcontinental Railroad. There were two companies building the railroad. The Union Pacific, building west from Omaha, Nebraska, and the Central Pacific building east from Sacramento, California. The Union Pacific started out making good progress across the flat plains. Then they hit the Indian Territory. The Indians attacked the workers and slowed down progress even more. Then they reached the Rocky Mountains, where the rugged land and harsh weather made it nearly impossible to work. Come along with me to experience this engineering miracle.
